STUCK IN LIMBO between two countries. Cyprus won’t let us in & Turkey kicked us out.
I’m going to tell you about our self-induced DISASTER yesterday at the ferry border crossing.
The first obstacle we encountered was getting out of Turkey at the port. Americans can only stay in Turkey for 3 months so we had applied for 2-year Turkey Residency Permits.
Unfortunately, because we didn’t have the physical cards yet, they ALMOST didn’t let us out. Instead, they said we could leave with a monetary penalty for “overstaying our visa”. $100 for us each and $100 for our car. They told us we can’t get back in without the physical permit.
After we pay the fines and take the ferry overnight to Cyprus we find ourselves at customs to check the dog passports.
We watch in horror as our dog Journey squats IN THE MIDDLE OF CUSTOMS and takes a massive $hit– it was OMG moment for sure.
They tell us that even though we have all the shots needed, we are missing a rabies titler test and in order to enter Cyprus, we would have to pay for the tests ($300) and they would need to be quarantined for 3 weeks.
Now we are f**ked because it’s not like we can go back to Turkey without the residency permits.
Eventually they come back and tell us that they will waive the quarantine rule and fee, and all we have to do was have them tested and call to get the results in a couple of weeks.
Talk about a costly (and totally avoidable) lesson.
Total costs to leave Turkey: $750
$225 Ferry one way
$200 Fines to leave Turkey for “overstaying” visa
$350 Dog Rabies Tests
Our mission to travel to every country of the world is a difficult one. But each border crossing is a success and gets us one step closer to our life’s mission. To fly a parachute in every country of the world.
Moral of the story is never turn back, you never know the reward on the other side of the obstacle.
